User Driven OSD Deployments with Modena

Microsoft Code-named “Modena” is one of the project internal names that was founded to deliver a enterprise-ready Configuration Manager 2007 Operating System Center solution for Microsoft itself.

In June 2009, the Modena team at Microsoft reached a milestone by releasing their first semi-formal release to external users. The vision is that they develop tools that not only are used at Microsoft and their external customers but also are delivered to customers to expedite and accelerate their deployments.

The Modena project team developed two tools:

Modena Beta OSD Tools
These provide administrator-configured preflight checks and input wizards that are user friendly.  They take Configuration Manager OSD, which is primarily designed for administrator driven OS deployments, and make it more user driven.

Modena Beta Driver Sync Tool
The Driver Synch tool is built to simplify adding drivers to your WSUS-based SUP servers, since your Configuration Manager clients can’t pull drivers directly from WU/MU.  This tool allows drivers listed in a spreadsheet to be populated into WSUS, or based on Configuration Manager device hardware data. This is especially important for Windows 7 since Windows 7 expects to check WU/MU for the latest and greatest drivers.
